River Restoration can be described as the act of reinstating natural processes to help restore a naturally functioning ecosystem. This can be achieved in numerous ways to benefit biodiversity and to ensure that they meet favourable conditions in order to thrive.
Rivers are dynamic in nature, ever flowing and ever changing. They vary immensely from one to the other and all present a unique set of challenges when it comes to management and restoration. Historically many Rivers have been mismanaged and practices such as dredging, canalisation, removal of in-channel habitat, impoundments such as weirs and hatches, development, and flood-plain disconnection have all led to problems for both people and nature.
